Pidge Reyes' Show at Avellana.. And other interesting things.

David Attenborough’s “Life on Earth” meets Gaudi’s Park Guell… Pidge Reyes’ creations may look out-of-this-world, yet seemingly their subjects are very much of this world. Once again, an artist draws from the greatest works of art. Just as Haeckel and Audubon and even Dr. Rizal were amazed by a world so real yet crafted in fantasy, this artist too appears to articulate nature in his works.
In contrast to his stark works in concrete and steel from previous exhibits, “Inspired Clusters” is in more than one sense organic. The sudden shifts in color and patina recall Lichen growth on stone. The Hidden nooks and crannies that reveal shiny under layers retell experiences of searching among rocks and pools exposed by a low tide.

On until Dec. 3 2011.

Viewing human expression in the "Mini-stop" of visual arts.. SM Megamall

It's such a welcome molting, the regular and unsynchronized F5'ing of Megamall galleries. There will always be something nice. I know that for a fact. Of course, the baduyness is there in some galleries, but a lot get it right most of the time. Some hits from Gallery Row, and more.

I really REALLY like this painting. But the money trees have been harvested early this month. Congratulations to the new owner. ENJOY your art. don't just invest in it.

Met the Artist of my coveted painting, but didn't have a lot of time to talk about his work. He was nice enough to stand still for a photo. JR Urao.

Peace.

One of my favorite works of art.. THE dinosaur mural. Most of the representations are now thought to be wrong, but as a little larval geek boy who read encyclopedia volumes like they were comics, these lumbering behemoths amazed me and kept me daydreaming in school.

"Zallinger's "Age of Reptiles" Mural

If you were a nerdly, dinosaur-crazed child in the 70's odds are you remember this:

This is an image of the world famous "Age Of Reptiles" mural painted by Rudolf Zallinger for the Peabody Museum in the 1940's. Looking at it now, the creatures, although still totally majestic (and well, awesome), look oddly stilted. That vintage T Rex looks mighty stumpy. At the time though, this was the top of the line conceptualization of dinosaurs.
Here's a pic of more of the mural:

"In April 1942, before beginning on the actual mural, Zallinger undertook 6 months of studies with Yale and Harvard scientists, and then 18 months of preliminary art work. Zallinger painted The Age of Reptiles mural from 1943 to 1947. For this magnificent achievement he received a Pulitzer Award for Painting in 1949."

Even though we have more realistic, souped up versions of dinosaurs these days, it's easy to see the magic these murals contained, igniting wonder about the prehistoric world in a million young squirming minds. You can see what an updated, more scientifically correct mural would look like now. (While cool "art wise" I have to say I prefer the look Zallinger's! The colors on the new one make me think of an extreme sports drink.)"

Artist Feature: Froilan Calayag

I have no words

Guest-starring Nonoy Marcelo's Ikabod

"Chase the Candy" ..One of my favorite Froilan Calayag paintings.. I don't know where it is now.

mmmmm... secretions..

The Artist's Renaissance Influence shows in this painting. I love the presence of water.

"Love Me! Heart Eater"

This is the world I see behind my eyelids.. Where odd creatures exist, and live off each other, and evil is rigid and angular.

Chaos+Color = Fun

I enjoy staring at the transparent, gel-like bear hat on the boy's head.

There's an amphibian called the Surinam Toad that deposits its eggs on the skin of its back. these slowly sink into the skin, creating large holes. In these holes, the eggs hatch and the tadpoles metamorphose inside these holes, emerging as miniature versions of their parents.
Another creature with Surinam Toad features..

Froilan's Prizewinning rendition of Jose Rizal's Terra Cotta Sculpture

Makes me want to run, too..

This is an Allusion to something i forgot. sorry.. But isn't it great? "Everything Turns Impressionism When You're Hungry"

The very first Froilan Calayag work i saw online. That moment, he became my favorite Filipino Contemporary artist. Even more so now having seen more of his work and having learned the experiences and emotions behind the layers of paint.

A take on the old fable

Characters come to life and become not just believable but familiar.

Very Deja-Vu for me.. I had one of those magnetic fishing games when I was smaller. I loved how the little fishes would open their mouths then you'd try to get them to latch onto the magnetic "lure". It's a very close simulation of what you feel when fishing for real fish.

Froilan Calayag is Awesome
